Herbert Rawlinson was one of the four sons and three daughters of Robert Theodore Rawlinson and his wife Emily. He was born in New Brighton, Wallasey, Cheshire, on the Wirral Peninsula of England on the 15th. November 1885. He sailed to America on the same ship as Charlie Chaplin to establish himself as a leading man in the silent movies before making the transition as a character actor in the "talkies." He appeared in almost two hundred movies
between 1911 and 12th.July 1953 when he died in Los Angeles, California. He was
married twice: to Loraine Abigail Long (January 1st 1924) and Roberta Arnold. His life is of particular interest in the respect that it reflects the development of cinema during its formative years and the manner in which actors were obliged to adapt to the challenges of changing film technologies. In addition, he was also my Grandfather's brother, which from my own perspective, provides a "Family History" dimension to the study. This site has been developed to share information about Herbert Rawlinson's life both in England and the USA with other family members and those involved in film who may have an interest in his personal history.
